Iron Maidens lead singer Bruce Dickinson once said: “I think the best way to find out about something is to try to do it to the max. A lot of people take up a hobby or sport and then find an excuse not to carry on with it. Once I start something, I won’t stop until I’m as good at it as I’ll ever be.”
There are many reasons why we seek to spend our time on hobbies and side projects. Some might want to master their skills or learn something new. A hobby also comes with stories and experiences that we can share with others.
It can also be relaxing and help to relieve stress if we do something we enjoy. Projects give you an opportunity to take your mind off of every day’s stress and duties, and activities not associated with work or other responsibilities can help you unwind and even increase self-esteem.
The extra mile
Some people take it a couple steps further and master their skills. Beyond relaxation, they spend an extra amount of time and often money on what they are doing in their spare time. And often it can just be a very creative idea that makes a project stand out. While browsing our Ambytion project feed, we found many of those projects and decided to start a section called the Exceptionals.
We want to present you 3 of these items in this blog post that caught our attention. This is by no means an exhausted list, and if you think a project is missing and really should be featured, get in touch and let us know via our feedback form in Ambytion, or send us a tweet on Twitter.
And now lets start:
Frost1515 built a canoe himself. He started off with a cardboard full-scale model to lay out the cut lines, cut all pieces of the body and put them together with zip ties before gluing and assembling each piece. Coated with fiberglass epoxy, the canoe got 2 seats, an oak pallet yoke, buoyancy tanks, and decks. All wood, all pretty and now ready for the next adventure to discover new waters. We can only imagine how cool it must feel to know you built that thing that keeps you afloat yourself.
In his tutorial, he shows us step by step how he did all of that. The full tutorial incl. 80+ photos can be found here and you can also find out how the buoyancy tanks are done!
With carefully selected, playful patterns, tiiApii makes sure the young and the young at heart will have a great time with her tents. Using recycled materials such as wooden poles or bike inner tubes as joints is not only a creative way to re-use retired material, but it also helps our planet.
Want to do something meaningful in your spare time and save hundreds of dollars in equipment? Build your own guitar! This or something similar must have crossed Gallardo147’s mind when he started his project, and make no mistake: his DIY guitar is a true rock star.
Lots of cutting, sanding and gluing efforts turned this Honduran wood into a beauty. Learn on his project page with 50+ photos which router bit to use, how to install the neck and electronics and why not everything has to be perfect for a beautiful result.
Let us know which one is your favorite 🙂
